Ice Cream Made In a Ziploc Bag Is Good

Last night we made ice cream
in a Ziploc bag.

The list of ingredients is short:
milk, sugar, vanilla.

It was easy to involve
more than one child.
One has to hold the bag,
one helps with the measuring.

Add some ice to a larger bag.
Pour in some rock salt.

This will help the milk freeze
quickly into ice cream.
Put the smaller bag
of milk inside and...

Now it's time to SHAKE!

And shake some more.

It won't be long before you have
your own bowl of ice cream.

Here is the recipe we followed:

1 c whole milk
2 1/2 T sugar
1/2 t vanilla

Place those ingredients in a
quart size bag and seal well.

Fill a gallon size bag half-full of ice.
Add to that about 8-10 T of rock salt.

Place the smaller bag into the larger bag and shake. In about 5-10 minutes you will have ice cream.
And it tastes really good.

This was a great hands-on activity for math and science. Your hands will get cold...so it's good to take turns shaking the bag. The more shakers involved the better.

It is also a little messy. We did this outside because the bag gets quite drippy. I would also add the rock salt outside. I didn't and now have little pellets of rock salt all over the floor.

One last tip: rinse off the smaller bag and cut the top off. You don't want your ice cream tasting salty.
